Fathers Day

Since childhood I have been a sucker for Bollywood movies. My exposure to Hollywood movies was very limited so to say. Why?  (Me whispers, “We were not allowed!”) But then somehow I never pined for them either. Yet when I came of age and was independent enough to take calls on what I could watch and what not, I chose to catch up on the good movies that must be watched. And along the journey, I came across some beautiful movies that have stuck with me and revisit them time and again just to feel the emotions all over again. (Well that’s the case with Bollywood movies too! Would you despise me if I told you that I have watched Anil Kapoor starrer “SAHEB’ atleast 20 times?) Now when I thought about writing a Father’s Day post, I squandered hours trying to decide what I can I right that will measure the true depths of a father’s love for his child/children.

I recall the opening dialogue from the bollywood blockbuster ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham’

“Maa apna pyaar jataa deti hai, par pita kabhi bol nahi pataa ki who apne bacche se kitna pyaar karta hai”

Which translates to ‘while a mother is so vocal and repetitive about how much she loves her child, on the contrary a father’s love for his child is no less, yet is unable to express it in as many words’.

I never was able to gauge the reality in this statement when I was just my Daddy’s girl. But now when I observe my husband turning into a doting father with the intensity increasing with each passing day, I understand the depth of a father’s love for his kids.

And its’ just not love that a father holds in his heart for his child. He holds a million dreams and wishes to see his blood go out in the world and conquer it. There is anger, whenever he sees his child falter and wants to change that immediately. There is fear, because he wants to protects his child from the harsh realities of the world for as long as possible. And much more…

Coming back to the movies, here are some of the strongest Daddy characters from some of the finest movies of their times, that I have come to admire over time. These are the movies that give us a peek-a-boo into the deep recesses of a father’s heart. Watch them with your kids, this Father’s Day

Pursuit of Happiness

Don’t ever let someone tell you that you cant do something. Not even me. You gotta dream, you gotta protect it. When people cant do something themselves, they’re gonna tell you that you cant do it.

You want something, go get it. Period.

Even in the face of utmost adversity, the restlessness of this father to drive the above point across to his son, really took my heart away.

Life Is Beautiful

A child brings out the best in a man. This movie is the perfect example of this. While the protagonist of the movie is living a horror of a life, he makes sure that his son senses none of it. The courage of a man who has pledged to keep his son safe and innocent while he is alive is heart breaking.

Father of the Bride

While this movie is very light and romantic at its core,  but nowhere else will one find a more accurate depiction of a father’s insecurities who knows that his little girl is not little anymore and that day is near when he will have to give away his daughter. The crux of the matter is there in this dialogue,

Reverend: Who presents this woman in holy matrimony?
George: I do. [voiceover] Who presents this woman? This “woman.” But she’s not a woman, she’s just a kid. And she’s leaving us…I realized at that moment that I was never going to come again and see Annie at the top of the stairs. Never going to see her again at our breakfast table in her nightgown and socks. I suddenly realized what was happening. Annie was all grown up and leaving us, and something inside began to hurt.

What A Girl Wants

Oh! I guess I am being biased towards fathers of daughters today. But I recently happened to watch this movie. Another romcom, that revolved around a young girl who has set out to find her roots and discover her relationship wither estranged father. This movie is a perfect example of the fact that, once a man realizes that he is a father, every other role takes a back seat. Even if he hasn’t seen his daughter until she was a teenager.

I am Sam

I happened to first watch the Bollywood version of this movie. It was a heart-warming yet disturbing issue where a man has been thrown in a challenge of being a father while he has his own developmental disabilities. One may be irked by the sweet reality that even in the face of personal challenges which are near impossible to overcome, a father’s love and dedication towards his child prevails and eventually wins.

Which are your favorite Hollywood movies that make you privy to the truth of how much a father loves his kids?
