Book Blurb – The Pregnancy Handbook For Indian Moms A Doctor’s Answers To All Your Questions

Women in India are used to relying on tales related by older women to help them through pregnancy. Some of them may be rational advice based on experience but at times the young mother may find herself smothered by superstition and restriction due to the edicts laid out by mothers and mothers-in-law. Mention you are expecting, or better still, let it show and the women around you will swarm to you with tasty food gifts and loads of advice.

In such a scenario, an educated and a modern young woman would prefer to get some proper medical advice which is not just old wives tale. This book helps women understand the changes that are undergoing in their body and the precautions and tests they need at proper times. Forewarned, they say, is forearmed.

The book starts with a detailed account of how you should prepare your body for pregnancy. What happens during each trimester and how you should deal with the changes. All the tests and injections that are mandatory for each step. How to exercise to keep fit and what to eat. How to look out for potential problems and ways to deal with it. What to expect during labour and childbirth and how to go about it.

Book Review – The Pregnancy Handbook For Indian Moms A Doctor’s Answers To All Your Questions

In this age of information overflow through the internet and every possible person acting like a subject matter expert in everything, an expecting mother can get rather pretty confused. As far as I am concerned, I am old school and like to fall back on books whenever I want authentic information. And I am glad that I came across this Pregnancy Handbook by Dr. Vinita Salvi to find answers to the endless questions that swarm during the most over whelming experience of a woman’s life.

While the doctor author tries to keep the information as medically relevant as possible, she does so in quite a to the point and humorous style. While I did feel that most of the information is available online, I would rather have expecting mothers have this book (in their devices or on their shelves) and have the required information secured in one place and refer to it as and when the need arises.

Though this book might be perceived as a spin off from the ‘What To Expect When You Are Expecting’, but is decently targeted for Indian audience with some relevant cultural references.

Diet and fitness are two major concerns that have been catered to in detail and will prove to be extremely helpful for the pregnant women.  The doctor also elaborates the reasons and remedies for various health issues that expecting mothers may face during their pregnancy.

P.S. – To welcome a baby into this world, is a huge responsibility while it is also a long journey.  This Pregnancy Handbook is one go to reference book for information bites and quick solutions to regular pregnancy issues.

I was an ardent reader of “What to Expect” during my pregnancy, but I get your point about having an Indian point of view for certain things. Will keep it in mind if ever plan baby no. 2!
