Book Blurb – Know Your Child : The Art of Raising Children by H.H.Sri Sri Ravi Shankar

Raising children can be a big challenge. In this competitive world; we want our children to be successful? How do we measure success after all? And fulfilled life. In this book, His Holiness Sri Sri Ravi Shankar highlights simple points for parents and teachers, on raising children. These subtle cues go a long way in laying the foundation for children to grow into fine human beings- happy yet responsible, focused but wit a large perspective on life, having a strong character with the softness of human values.

Book Review – Know Your Child : The Art of Raising Children by H.H.Sri Sri Ravi Shankar

In a country of several godmen and godwomen, most talk about the ideal character that a human being should possess. But hardly does anyone talk about how in real life, we can mold our and our kids’ character taking into account the practicalities of life.  How it is essential for a parent or a teacher to Know Your Child.

When I got my elder son admitted to a school run by the SSRVM Trust and led by the guiding principles of Pt. Sri Sri Ravi Shankar to provide value education in a friendly stress-free environment, my guiding principle was that it was one school of decent repute close to my place. So close that it takes only 10 minutes by road to reach the school. (for me that was a WOW factor for me). And thus when I lay my eyes on this book, I pounced upon the opportunity and bought the book. I thought it would make for an interesting and reinstating read and assure me that I had chosen the best for my kids.

And was I disappointed. Not really. This book is a collection of write-ups and interviews by the spiritual thought leader that have appeared in various media over the years. It is very heartening to read these, for one simple reason. For a spiritual leader to be talking about the future generations and how it is the current generations prerogative to give them the correct upbringing is not a norm these days. Most spiritual leaders talk about self development, soul searching, and inner happiness. But hardly does anyone talk about how we are indebted to our parents’ generation for bringing us up with the values that they have and how we owe it to our kids to equip them with the same.

Here is one book that talks in detail, one essay after another there is so much food for thought as to the role of education and that of educationists in bringing up not academic robots, but well rounded human beings who are capable of taking care of themselves as well as of their environment be it the people or the fast depleting resources bestowed on us by mother earth.

There is so much emphasis on holistic education and the deep impact of teachers on kids that if you are a teacher or an educationist, you are bound to feel either proud or scared by the amount of responsibility that you shoulder.  As in H.H. Sri Sri Ravi Shankar’s own words –

Only an education that nourishes inherent virtues can impart true intelligence. Today, it is the concern of all parents that their children should grow up to be happy, well-educated human beings with core values.
