ZEE5's Kaafir

I have been extremely wary of the deluge of web series available on various platforms. Reasons? Well, with two boys in the tow, I can’t be seen with a gadget in my hands for too long. Also, I am scared that I might not be able to pull myself out of the plethora of content available online as of date.

But now and then I come across content that is not only pertinent but also promises to be emotionally supercharged. One such web series Kaafir has released on ZEE5 on 15th June. I happened to watch its trailer earlier and figured that Kaafir is the story of a Pakistani girl who due to very peculiar circumstances lands in Kashmir and is detained on charges of being a militant.

Yes, I know, as Indians our interest is piqued as soon as it’s Pakistan and Kashmir. The political backdrop is something that most Indians feel for very strongly, but the story of Kaafir primarily remains a personal tale of Kainaaz (Dia Mirza) and her daughter, Seher and their difficulties in the prison. The long seven years that Kainaaz spends in prison are full of atrocities. Her pitiable state in the pits of the prison continues until Vedant (Mohit Raina) comes along, who is not convinced that someone like Kainaaz could be a militant. He chooses to believe her claims of being not guilty and decides to wear his lawyer’s cape after a gap of eight years to fight her case in the court.

Yep! In a nutshell, that’s Kaafir for you. Yes, of course, the drama that comes accrued to the militancy scene in Kashmir got me interested initially, but what kept me glued was the very personal story of Kainaaz and her daughter who she gives birth in the jail itself.

‘A terrorist who is also a mother’ the thought itself is unsettling enough. But what is more disturbing is the fact that even before she came to be in the prison, she was a victim of bigamy at the hands of a culture that considers a woman incomplete and useless if she fails to bear a child. The patriarchal culture always blames the woman for infertility.  (Read about the reasons of Infertility among men and women here)

For a woman who has landed in a prison by a brutal turn of events, she takes a decision to bring her child into the world, knowing that the child will hopelessly be brought up in prison for she does not know for how long she shall be detained. But she dares to dream for her daughter and hopes that one day she will be able to create a normal life for her daughter.

Kaafir is a heart-wrenching tale of Kainaaz who has been distanced from her family and victimized by the political legacy of two states. But what is heart-warming is the love she has for her daughter. The hopes that she garner’s each day when she sends her off from the prison to the municipal school. Just so that she can read, write and see the world outside.

This 8 episode web series Kaafir is like a lease of fresh air that takes you on a roller coaster ride of a mother in very unusual circumstances to find normalcy in her daughter’s life. So, do catch Kaafir on ZEE5.
