There was a phase in my life as a young adult when food was only a means to stay alive and not the end. But today as I take up challenges of life as a mother, I think that food is the best friend that I have on my journey. Ofcourse there are books and my blog, but then there is something called the comfort foods, the static friends who stare back at me and says, ‘Feeling overwhelmed? What are you waiting for? Come on gobble me up and cheer up!’

I know some may argue that treating food as a stress buster may not be a very good idea, but it definitely is the most harmless idea if one knows their limits and is not guilty of putting on unhealthy pounds on themselves. One of these days when I picked up a bowl of my fried rice after a hectic afternoon of taking care of the kids and home chores, I realized that there are some foods that help me relax like no other. These are my ‘comfort foods’. When I indulge in these, stress scuttles out of my system and leaves me refreshed to take on the upcoming challenges with a new vigor. Today I am going to let you peek into my shelf of comfort foods and tell you about the foods that have the potential to awaken the epicure like senses –

The 2 Minute Noodles

Well, if any of those people who have shared the roof with me were to read this post, they would dismiss me outright, if I gave any other food item the number one position in my list of comfort foods. As unhealthy as it may sound to some, we all know that we have thrived on this two minute noodle preparation at some point of life or other. One of my friends’ once said, ‘I have never seen anyone putting so much (emotions & effort) in cooking this instant noodles, as you do’.

Well what can I say? Just that I love the instant noodles and love to try out variations of it with veggies and sauces, as one would tend to do with pizza or pasta.

The picture below is instant noodles strained out after boiling and stir fried with sauté of ginger garlic paste, capsicum and onions along with a dash of mustard sauce.

Fried Rice

Ever since I left my job to be at home for my kids, I have made sure that we have some rice boiled for lunch. Once the rice is ready, there is a plethora of experiments that I can do with them and process them to come up with absolutely mouth watering ‘fried rice’ versions.

The one in the picture below is rice stir fried with capsicum, carrots, beans and some lemon juice.

Sometimes, I simply toss the rice in butter with some salt and black pepper powder. Let me tell you, the beauty of this comfort food lies in its simplicity.

Bananas With Toppings

At times, when my tummy feels full yet the tongue craves for something nice and friendly, I tend to turn towards this ready to eat fruit (which is available in our kitchen round the year).  But instead of simply peeling off the skin and shove it into my mouth, I like to cut it into slices and top it up with a sauce or jam of my liking. My favorite of all and also a healthy choice of toppings are nuts, raisins and honey. It is filling and also nutritious. And it helps me fight stress like a ninja.

Hot Chocolate Milk

And then there are those difficult mid nights, when I feel so sleepy that I can’t keep my eye from drooping. Yet I can’t retire to my bed, because I need to get some writing done before I can call it a day. On those nights, a hot brown colored drink with its warmth and intoxicating aroma fills my senses and motivates me to keep going. Before I discovered hot chocolate drink, I had a hard time keeping myself awake because I do not have tea and preparing coffee needed some effort. But now I have a can full of hot chocolate powder and a large mug that sits on my kitchen shelf staring back at me, assuring me that they have my back covered whenever I need that extra shot of energy in wee hours of the night.

  2. I simply love two minute noodles. I really felt angered by all that needless controversy over Maggie noodles some time back. Thank god for the supreme court of India which came down heavily upon the FSSAI where unqualified food regulators who did not have basic knowledge, were finding fault with Maggie for partisan reasons. I grew up on Maggie and to this day I have not had any problems with it. My daughter loves Yippee. I was taught by a distant relative of mine to add a sprinkling of Garam Masala to Maggie and it tastes wonderfully spicy. I love spicy food. And another flavor of Maggie that used to be around decades ago was the prawn flavor. Nowadays no one seems to have heard of it. I used to love it. It was taken off the market long time back. Wonderful article ! #Superbloggerchallenge2018 #Instacuppa

  3. Rice in any form is my comfort food. Give me a bowl of hot rice and I can have it with a dollop of ghee, just like that!
I love hot chocolate. In fact I loved having Mocha at CCD for the lovely coffee-chocolaty flavour it had.
