/“Trust me Sarika! You will find someone much better to spend your life with.” Neev’s heart broke into million tiny pieces as he tried to pull his hand out of Sarika’s grip.

“You’ve been saying that to me ever since I proposed to you. But look, we’ve made it through eight long years as a couple. We just need to take the wedding vows now.” Sarika rested her head on Neev’s shoulder, thinking of how she could make him change his mind. She knew though that it wasn’t going to be easy.

“I had told you then also that I couldn’t promise you a life-long commitment. It was you who agreed to this no strings attached relationship. Now for last one year, you have been pestering me for marriage. This is not fair.” irritation was evident in Neev’s disgruntled voice.

“But you haven’t told me why?” Sarika rolled her eyes, “How many times are we going to go through this drill before you finally give in?” Neev just looked at her in exasperation.

“Forever. Coz I am never going to agree to marry you.” the sadness in his eyes desperately defied his stern tone.

“Sarika, I am doomed to remain a loner for life. I can’t handle a commitment such as marriage.” Neev felt his resolute weaken under Sarika’s piercing hazel brown eyes. The flutter in his heart at the sight of a fallen strand of her hair over her cheek did nothing to make things easier.  But there was no way that he was going to give in.

“What if I told you that you don’t need to take care of anything except love me?” their fingers were still entangled, “My love is enough for both of us. All that you need to do is, just stay by my side.” Sarika wasn’t pleading. Instead, her confident words had a soothing affect and calmed the noises in Neev’s head. The same noises that had been haunting him for years now.  The cacophony of two incompatible adults stuck in an unhappy marriage throwing a continuous string of abuses on each other every single day, morning and night. There was no way that Neev could forget the hurt of his parents’ fallen marriage.

“You don’t understand. I am incapable of handling a relationship.” Neev shook his head as his eyes looked into abyss in front of him.

Sarika was about to object in annoyance but suddenly felt his grip tighten around her fingers. She placed a palm on Neev’s face to make him turn to look at her, her eyes filled with love and hope. Neev felt a strange quiet fill his head as he let out a sigh.

Sarika would have missed the slight nod of his head, had her hand not been there on his face. Her heart skipped a beat in elation. And Neev engulfed her in a hug, holding her so tight as if his life depended on it.

  1. The ghosts of the past do affect the present. In this case, however, you gave it a positive turn while I was really hoping the opposite would happen. Every story which ends on a happy note is a story well told.

  2. I’m missing something here. Does Neev have Diabetes? Does he agree to marry her? If not, I think Sarika is better off the way she is than marrying a wimp. If he is so convinced that his marriage will reflect his parents’ they are better off the way they are. And if she does want to be Mrs. Someone, she should find someone who wants to make her Mrs. Someone. I just think the heroine of your story is chasing a dream. That is presuming I’ve understood this story.

    1. I am not sure if you noticed in the beginning that he himself is not very happy with his decision to not marry her. He needs that reassurance and a confidence boost which he finds in his anchor Sarika. Probably my story telling needs to get more refined 😉

  3. You had us wondering where this would end. I was afraid they’d break up. It’s true that children of broken marriages sometimes find it hard to commit, but I’m glad they worked it out!

  4. Hi Anupriya,
I loved the way Neev worked through his demons. We all have our issues, and it is easier to give up on a relationship, than fight our own issues. Loved the happy ending. Keep writing.
