Our life is based on thoughts in our mind, perceptions garnered by our senses and the Sanskars (resolves) held by our soul. The impact of combined input of the above three elements determines our needs, desires, aspirations and expectations from the birth that we are in.

The world around, reflects on our mind and intellect and awakens many unseen sensations within us; this is because mind generates lust, anger, attachment, greed and pride. Our desires change with time, circumstances and the perceived illusions around us.

Almost all schools of spirituality advocate that reflection of our thoughts crop up from this illusive world, and the mind gets busy with permutations / combinations in each and every moment of life. The mind becomes dissatisfied and thus fails to see its own power that lies within. And this is where the dual nature of the mind starts getting nurtured.

When the thought that ‘I do not have enough’ plagues one’s mind, it becomes worrisome. On the other hand, the fear that what I have will not last forever also makes peace elude from the mind.

The generation of bliss has to come from within. When we start looking for bliss from sources outside us, we walk away from the innate honesty of our soul. This process makes us impure, false, other than the reality. As a result duality sets in. We might want truth and fearlessness, but by succumbing to the treacherous ways of the outside world makes us doubt ourselves. This is the concept of Duality.

I know the universe is governed by an Infinite intelligence; All that exists follows infinite laws.”  – Thomas Alva Edison

The root cause of a tussle between virtuousness against promiscuity remains in human beings because we tend to incline towards convenience and suitability, trying to fit in with the ways of the outer world. One forgets that, these ways may not be representative of the absolute truth.

The knowledge acquired in the outer world could be just that perceived knowledge. And perceived knowledge is most likely to result in varied perceptions. This will lead different individuals to draw different conclusions from the same circumstances..

Gradually, this acquired knowledge which varies with individual perception and is far from absolute is the duality that eventually becomes the root cause of disharmony, misunderstandings and unhappiness.

Then What Is Absolute Virtuousness?

Sages and clairvoyants over thousands of years have given accounts of what are the virtues that man or woman shall bide for throughout their life. These are the virtues that make one person great viz-a-vis the others.

We often hear spiritual leaders say that the motive of human life is to evolve. But how does one evolve? What is the simplest route to evolving?

The simplest route to evolution of a soul is to stick to certain virtues that are governed by love, compassion, empathy and lead one to the path of greatness, not only individual but of a community at large.

Yes, it might seem like an old fashioned belief that glorifies sacrifice and austerity. But it is not like that. The idea is to grow yourself, and ensure that the community around you grows with you. In a more contemporary line of thought, “What fun will it be to be on the top, if you really are all alone with no one in the vicinity to revere you.”  And only those will revere you with genuine appreciation, who have been privy to your virtues.

Others might look up to you, but they will be jealous and you wouldn’t want too many jealous people around you. Isn’t it?

Why Is Duality Wrong / Undesirable For a Strong Character?

It is simple to live a life with set rules that have little scope for deviation. The moment, you start taking exceptions and de-route from our virtues, there is a ramified tree of decision making criteria. One miss and you are moving away from the desired result i.e. virtuousness.

And slowly without even realizing, a couple of such decisions later, you are on a path so far deviated that reaching the destination seems like a far flung aspiration.

It’s the same as a child lying just once so as to escape the wrath of her parent. And then before she knows it, she has built up a web of lies, one lie meant to cover up for the other.

In the coming chapters, we will discuss in exact detail, what are the virtues that count for evolution of an individual and how following these virtues can keep us away from bringing in duality in our thought process and actions.

  1. We have become so consumed in ascending, connecting to Divinity etc etc that we’ve forgotten how to live. I am eternally grateful to my late father who taught me the meaning of living life and not trying to reach for lofty idealism that we simply cannot achieve. Perhaps if we brought our thoughts down from above to below (to Earth), we may make life a whole lot better for many. Your post was food for thought. Thank you for that.
